Vivo has announced plans to compete in the mixed reality (MR) market with the unveiling of its own headset next year. Despite the lukewarm market response to similar products, such as Apple’s Vision Pro, Vivo is moving forward with its ambitious project, reportedly investing heavily in its development. At an event today, Vivo revealed that a prototype of the MR headset will be showcased in September or October of next year.

The company aims to surpass the features of the Vision Pro, although by that time, the Vision Pro will have been on the market for more than a year and a half. Vivo’s dedicated team for the MR headset has grown to 500 members, indicating the company’s belief in the potential of this emerging niche.

Vivo’s mixed reality ambitions

The company seems optimistic that, by offering similar or better experiences at a lower price point, it can capture market share from its competitors. The MR device will undergo “high-fidelity prototype experiences” in several cities across China by late 2025. However, the exact date for the commercial release remains unclear, depending largely on the readiness of supporting content ecosystems.

Industry observers note that while the market for such high-end MR devices has been slow to take off, there remains potential for growth if the technology can be made more accessible and affordable. Stay tuned for more updates as Vivo prepares to enter the MR market amid increasing competition and evolving consumer expectations.
