Virgance is a new company that aims to take activism and give it the Web 2.0 treatment.
In general terms, this means that it seizes the inherent power of social networks and intends to apply it in a way that will redound to social change. Improving the world, no less.
In order to do so, the idea is to create companies that can do as much good as possible, while also being able to sustain themselves and give their workers respectable salaries. Using the approach mentioned above (harnessing the power of social networks), the company intends to propel every single idea above and beyond and turn it into a citizen-powered global campaign to change the world. As it is pointed out online, new activism demands new methods. Networks have the kind of power that is needed to communicate and transmit ideas.
At the end of the day, Virgance poses an interesting question: What do we do when our ideals clash with monetary considerations? What path should we follow then: A or B – the path of our convictions, or the yellow brick road? The answer ultimately varies from individual to individual, but what this team wants to do is to create a third and viable path. It is a very noble aim, and I wish them best of luck.
