Anne Cote, owner of Dad’s restaurant in Charlton, has experienced an unexpected wave of support in the form of crowds of customers, following a viral social media post detailing the restaurant’s struggles amid disruptive roadwork. “This support has been overwhelming, it’s completely taken us by surprise,” said an emotional Anne.

The queues began early at 8:30 am, with patrons braving obstacles posed by the eight-month-long road construction. The initial appeal which ignited this tremendous turn out was made by a local customer. Masses of townsfolk arrived at the restaurant, undeterred by the extensive roadwork, showcasing their dedication and anticipation despite the hindrances.

Anne Cote, who has been running the restaurant since her father’s retirement in 2008, was taken aback and overjoyed by the massive lunchtime crowd. She expressed her surprise especially considering her deep roots in the same community. It was not only a business boost but also reaffirmed her personal ties and strengthened her determination to keep the restaurant’s unique charm alive.

However, it hasn’t been all sunshine for the establishment on Route 20. Despite pleas for assistance, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation pressed on with their road safety enhancement work near Dad’s, exacerbating the challenges faced by the business.

Alongside the disruptions and decreased accessibility for their customers, the unwillingness from the agency to provide any help has presented a daunting environment for the struggling establishment.

Customers Michael DiCenzo and Dave Blondin suggested that the construction could have been scheduled outside the restaurant’s peak hours to minimise potential losses for the restaurant due to decreased accessibility. “People might opt for other eateries without construction-induced access issues,” they worried.

Support was also extended by state representatives Paul K. Frost and John Marsi. Frost requested that the restaurant’s parking area be exempt from the construction, while Marsi emphasized the significance of continuous patronage during such trying times. He pointed out that it was key in ensuring businesses’ resilience amidst adversities.

The strong backing from the Charlton community has seemingly lifted Cote’s spirits and could potentially secure the future of Dad’s, irrespective of the difficulties triggered by the roadwork project. The community’s snapshot of resilience portrays the importance of preserving local businesses and retaining their charm. “This continued support is not only a testament to the community’s shared sense of responsibility, but it also underscores the crucial role Dad’s plays in the social and cultural fabric of Charlton,” concluded Cote.
