If anyone actually reads my articles, they’ll know I have a thing for travel. And by thing I mean obsession. So, whenever I come across travel apps that make traveling more awesome, I’m all over them. Luckily, I’ve discovered some seriously cool travel apps that deserve to be mentioned again so you can make sure your next adventure an unforgettable one.
1. Vayable
Jamie Wong had the brilliant idea, after a truly unique Moroccan adventure, to connect local tour guides with travelers. And Vayable was born. The app helps you find bespoke and alternative tours in the city you’re visiting to get you off the beaten path and onto some very authentic tours you would have trouble discovering yourself. Don’t be that tourist and take the Disney World tour; brag to your friends about the awesome Vayable tour that you took with a local.
2. Toursphere
Rob Pyles is a true travel lover and an awesome guy to interview, too. His Boston-based platform Toursphere helps non-techies create unique tours for museums, businesses, historical sites and beyond so visitors can get a personal tour right on their smartphone. That’s wicked smaat.
3. Translator with Speech
Want an easier way to communicate when traveling in a foreign land? Put down the pocket English Spanish dictionary and check out Translator with Speech. The app lets you talk out what you want translated and then repeats it in the selected language, pronunciation and all. This is one of those apps that really makes you grateful for living in the 21st century. Amazing!
4. Couchsurfing
OK, so this type of travel is not for everyone. But, for a wayfaring backpacker like myself, finding a local to stay with in a community of other global travelers is an amazing way to see a city (and save a buck). I’m still friends with my couchsurfing buddies in South America, and if they ever find themselves in Tampa Florida, I’ll hook them up with a couch (well, my mom will).
5. Airbnb
Airbnb is a must for those wanting a different lodging experience than just a boring old hotel. Airbnb is an extensive network of accommodations across the world ranging from penthouses to beach huts that you can rent and feel like you’re a local. And, the site is gorgeous and inspiring. Definitely check it out.
Whether you’re looking for a truly unique adventure, or wanting to live like a local, there are so many apps that have made traveling that much more cooler. Now, do I really need to write another article about why you should take a vacation? I sure hope not.
