Tasty Startups: Rise

The Craving it Satisfies
One-on-one daily nutrition coaching via smartphone
Why it has a winning recipe
For the sake of brevity, I will limit my manifesto on nutrition to saying that I believe most of us would avoid health woes, eat smarter, and feel much better if we had access to a nutritionist. I will also be quick to admit that my understanding of nutrition is limited – I do a lot of guessing when it comes to choosing what I put into my body.
So, I was excited to learn about Rise, rise.us, a mobile application that connects people with a nutrition coach to help them reach personal goals. It’s not a weight loss program, a dieting app, or pie in the sky solution. Which is to say that it’s working, and making a lot of people happy – both customers and investors.
Rise puts customers in daily contact with a personal nutrition coach, a registered dietician. Snap pictures of what you eat using your phone (iOS only, for the moment), and your selected nutritionist gives you feedback and tips.
Together you establish goals and then set weekly plans. Your coach helps keep you on the right track. When you’re unsure about a recipe or what to add to the shopping list, you can turn to your coach for answers.
This system is smart for a number of reasons. One, it helps people become educated about dieting quickly and with little effort. Since it’s not a one size fits all solution, it has broad appeal – Rise can help those looking to lose weight, feel more energetic, better manage a chronic condition like diabetes, etc.
And it holds individuals accountable. Knowing you have to show someone else what you’re eating surely makes you consider your choices a tad longer. Not to mention, you’ll probably want to get your money’s worth. Subscriptions run $14.99 per week or $49.99 per month. That’s not chump change, but, hey, this is our health we’re talking about. Staying healthy is the best way to save money by avoiding costly medical bills and doctor visits.
The price of Rise is quite reasonable when you think about having daily contact with an expert. Where else do you find this level of personal attention and continuity of care?
A great way to take control of our health is to understand and implement a healthier diet. Rise gets this. What’s more, their formula has worked so well that they’ve integrated with Apple Health and Fitbit to start factoring in physical activity into coaching.
I know my habits fall somewhere between not the best and far from the worst. Turning to a coach to make the informed adjustments that will help me feel more fit and energetic is exactly the kind of guidance I’ve been eager to explore.
Let’s do this. I’m ready to feel my energy level instead of my blood pressure rise.
