Summoning Salt, a well-known speedrunner and content creator, has achieved a remarkable feat by becoming the first person to defeat Mike Tyson in the classic NES game “Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!!” in under two minutes. This milestone, which occurred on February 10, 2025, required an astounding 75,000 attempts over five years to perfect. The fight against Tyson in the game is notoriously difficult, requiring a combination of skill, precision, and luck.
Summoning Salt explained that the achievement involved hitting all 21 frame-perfect punches, executing 10 perfect dodges and ducks, and encountering lucky conditions with a 1/7,000 to 1/10,000 chance of occurring. “I played very well during phases 1 and 2, losing only 5 frames across all 16 dodges/ducks, while hitting all 14 frame-perfect punches. Tyson also gave me a perfect pattern with no delays, which is a 1/1600 pattern,” Summoning Salt detailed in a video description.
“I then played perfectly during phase 3, hitting all 7 frame-perfect punches, while Tyson gave me a fairly fast but not perfect pattern.”
The speedrunning community has widely applauded Summoning Salt for this well-earned record, highlighting it as one of the most impressive accomplishments they have witnessed. The creator, who has amassed over 90,000 subscribers on YouTube, described the achievement as “the greatest gaming achievement I have ever accomplished.
Reflecting on his success, Summoning Salt expressed a mix of disbelief and quiet satisfaction. “It’s over,” he remarked after the record-setting match.
Speedrunner achieves sub 2 milestone
“I thought I’d be a lot more excited about this. Holy shit, dude! It’s fucking over…
Dude, am I dreaming right now? … I’m sorry I’m so quiet.
I’m kind of in shock right now that that just happened.”
Despite the possibility of his record being beaten in the future, Summoning Salt has no plans to further improve his time. “It will be beaten by somebody one day, likely by matching this fight and then getting better luck in phase 3. I have no interest in competing for that but am extremely proud to have gotten the first sub 2 ever on Mike Tyson,” he stated.
This achievement not only sets a new standard within the speedrunning community but also demonstrates the enduring popularity of the Punch-Out!! series, which has remained a favorite among gamers since its debut in 1987.
