Did you know that the sounds you make while performing any regular chore, like cooking breakfast can be considered under certain lights as precious as a symphony? It seems the world is full of beautiful sounds, with domestic andantes and urban sonatas, and so the people at SoundTransit are up and about collecting them, and allowing you to transit this maze of user-created sounds. Since the idea of the whole project is that users travel the world in search and discovery of sounds and music, there is an airline-thing to SoundTransit.
nl as when you enter the site you are requested to ‘book a flight’, and your playlists are dubbed ‘itineraries’, and you can download them to your computer in mp3 format. Using this site is extremely easy and fun: first you need to decide on your trip (geographical origin and destination, and number of stops in the way –you don’t get to choose where to stop), and then the site will present several combinations of sounds; for instance, if you choose to go from Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina to Helsinki in Finland with three stops, you might end up listening to schoolgirls talking, a recording of a former military area for telecommunications in Leipzig, followed by roadworks in Marseille, from where you’ll go on to Antwerp and the sound of buzzing factories, un-definable sounds and crickets, and finally arrive to your destination, to be greeted by the sounds from a ferry entering Helsinki harbor. Quite trippy indeed, eh?
SoundTransit.nl In Their Own Words
“SoundTransit is a collaborative, online community dedicated to field recording and phonography. On this site, you can plan a sonic journey through various locations recorded around the world, or you can search the database for specific sounds by different artists from certain places. If you are a phonographer, you can also contribute your recordings for others to enjoy. The Creative Commons Attribution license encourages the sharing and reuse of all sounds on this website”.
Why SoundTransit.nl It Might Be A Killer
This is just a great project, both in its artistic and aesthetic conception, but what I reckon is just unbeatable is that all the sound transits are licensed under the Creative Commons platform, which means that they can be used for artistic and creative works confidently. Godspeed to them!
Some Questions About SoundTransit.nl
Happily, SoundTransit does not have any advertisement, which raises the question about revenue for the project. If they are going to become massive, as is quite likely, they will have a bit of a job and running costs. How will they pay for it without advertisements?
