Sony has announced a crucial reshuffle in its PlayStation’s executive ranks following the retirement of Jim Ryan. The company has named Hermen Hulst and Hideaki Nishino as the new co-CEOs, each responsible for managing significant elements of PlayStation’s business.

Hermen Hulst, the previous head of PlayStation Studios, has been appointed CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s (SIE) studio business group. Hideaki Nishino will take over as CEO of SIE’s platform business group.

The move to dual CEO roles is a first in PlayStation’s history and a direct response to the former head’s retirement. Under this arrangement, Sony’s CFO Hiroki Totoki has divided the CEO’s responsibilities into two main areas: platform and games.

The restructuring shows innovation by ensuring critical business sectors are managed by experts. The platform division will focus on hardware and infrastructure development, whereas the games division will handle content creation and publication.

The new co-CEOs, Nishino and Hulst, boast strong ties with Sony.

In particular, Nishino’s tenure spans over two decades, while Hulst demonstrates exceptional ability in product development and leadership across functionalities. Their combined experience is set to really invigorate the company’s outlook.

This leadership shakeup occurs amid the turmoil witnessed in the gaming industry, characterized by extensive job cuts. Sony’s decision to shut down its London Studio earlier this year further impacted the scenario.

As Sony prepares to unveil its recent earnings, the PS5 sales figures from the last fiscal year are under the industry’s spotlight. Hiroki Totoki, SIE Chairman, has proposed extending PlayStation games to PCs and other platforms. Therefore, this potentially expands revenue streams for first-party titles beyond the PlayStation console.
