SocWall.com – A Digg for High Resolution Images

SocWall.comIf you’re looking for some great computer wallpaper but don’t want to sift through thousand of images on a site like Webshots, check out SocWall, a new Digg-like effort that aims to bring you the best images for computer wallpaper use. Like Digg, you can vote on all content posted on the site as well as upload your own; only instead of links, SocWall features photo backgrounds for your desktop.

It’s a breeze to browse through different photo galleries (there are a wide variety of categories, from Sci-fi to cityscapes), and you can sort the images by most/least viewed, highest/lowest rated, most/least recent, and most/least popular. You don’t need to register to browse, vote on, download, or upload images. SocWall is brand new, so it’s still working on some features, but will soon expand to include more web 2.0 efforts, such a community forum.

Some Questions About SocWall.com

The site could benefit from adding some more social features. I don’t understand why exactly SocWall can claim to be a “social” site “inspired by Digg” when you don’t even need to register to use it. In fact, there is no registration option on the site. In order to truly be a social bookmarking site in practice and not only in theory, SocWall needs to expand to include features offered by Digg that let users interact with one another. Other frustrations include not being able to see where an image was taking (particularly irksome for the Cityscapes and Nature categories), as well as some categories’ lack of relevant sub-categories (Art should be divided, I think). I also wonder about the legality of this site; since you have to pay on sites like Webshots for high-resolution images, how can one be sure that these images are being uploaded and distributed legally?
