The idea behind this site is quite interesting in itself: adding age ratings to websites in the same way that movies and media on the whole is rated. “Interesting” is the key word here.
I don’t know how useful something like this can turn out to be. The way the system works, the webmaster adds a blurb displaying the age rating that his site has received automatically. So far, so good. But… what happens from that point onwards? I mean, if a teenager stumbles across a site reading “18’s only”, will he turn on his heels or will he careen forward? Because (and it has been proven by research) the feeling of doing something illegitimate is an incredible drive in itself.
That is no indictment on the Site Age Ratings website. Not at all. As I said at the beginning, the idea is interesting and it can make for an Internet in which parents that are browsing from site to site with their children can know if they have arrived somewhere they shouldn’t have come and leave before inappropriate content pop ups. And that is certainly valuable in itself.
SiteAgeRatings.com In Their Own Words
“The internet is a wonderful resource for people of all ages, but as with any type of media childeren may wander onto sites that may not be suited for them. Our age rating system automatically gives every single website an age rating – and webmasters can easily show these in their webpage!”
Why SiteAgeRatings.com It Might Be A Killer
It is an interesting initiative, now let’s see the degree of acceptance it can have.
