SavvyFrog.com is a really simple site with an ol’ times flair to it, as it is a copy of the Open Directory, to which a Google search box has been added, together with some advertising in the form of text-only links.
Some people might consider these directories slightly outdated and passé, since there wouldn’t be much sense in looking something up from a list of titles and links when one can simply type it in and have the results delivered in no time. However, there seems to be a trend that’s only beginning to catch up and which looks back to directories or at least a clutter of themed links; take a look at search engines like Mahalo.com, who have people searching up stuff and organizing special reports and coverage of what’s going on in the internet. The problem with directories, especially when they are massive like the Open Directory is, is keeping them updated, as it frequently is the case that you follow a link to a 404 error sign, which is what leads me away from projects like SavvyFrog.com and back to Google and other search engines.
