Website reKiosk allows registered users to sell content of their own as well as someone else’s. Users open digital storefronts are able to sell books, music, and short films as well.
Bloggers, publishers, curators and tastemakers should have a ball with this kind of capability to promote and share the content they love. It’s a way to share as well as reward the authors of the content because the creators of the content maintain 70% of the selling price and the users who sell digital goods at their online kiosks also make a percentage.
We had a chance to speak the folks at reKiosk and here’s what they shared with us.
How’d you come up with the name for your company?
We wanted a name that spoke to our core concept: We’re basically a giant digital tent that allows people to set up individual stores, or kiosks, that they can use to sell directly to their fans and followers. But there’s also the ability to ‘resell’ those digital files – that’s where the ‘re’ comes in.
What’s the very first thing you do at work everyday?
Read and respond to my emails.
How many people did you start the company with and how many people work for you now?
We started with 3 people, and we still have 3 full timers and 3 more part timers.
Remember the early days starting up?
We’re still living the early days. I don’t think we’ve even gotten to the struggle part yet.
How do you handle frustration? When/how was the last time you dealt with frustration?
I handle frustration on a daily basis so there’s no secret here. I just try to fix the problem and don’t let things out of your control get to you.
What’s your office environment like?
It’s my brother’s apartment and yes, music is always playing.
How do you picture your company in 5 years?
I try not to. there’s absolutely no predicting how these things turn out so why increase frustration while setting yourself up for false expectations and potential failure? I just try to make the best company for this year.
Who or what inspires you?
People who do what they love inspire me. The people who make their own schedule and are never unhappy to get out of bed in the morning and even more happy when their head finally hits the pillow at night.
How’d you fund this venture?
My own savings, plus some help from friends and family to start us off. We’ve had a couple generous backers who are pretty well established entrepreneurs, so that helps, too.
Got any great bootstrapping tips for the lean startups out there?
Only spend money on what is 100% necessary to get you to the next step. Business cards and office space are not 100% necessary.
Do you consider yourself a successful entrepreneur right now? If not, what’s it gonna take to make you feel successful?
Not at all. We’re still too young to classify as successful. A positive revenue stream would help too.
Website you couldn’t live without and why?
I guess I could live without all websites, but why would I want to?
Mobile App you’re in love with and why?
I still have a blackberry so I don’t use mobile apps. But I’m sure there are a lot out there that I would love.
Dogs or cats?
Dogs. We have one in the office.
iOS or Android?
We shouldn’t have to choose. There are things I love (and despise) about both. In a perfect world I could use excel on a mac just as well as on a PC.
Number 1 country you’ve always wanted to visit but haven’t yet?
Iran. It’s where my family is from.
What’s the greatest thing about your company?
Cliche as it may sound: no one else has done it yet.
