The way search engines are evolving is not really surprising given the skyrocketing development of tailor-made content solutions. In the case of PopGist (a new alternative to conventional search engines), the approach is to employ a ranking algorithm which is based on auto-discovered and topic-focused expert pages.
This means that taking a concrete search result as a starting point PopGist resorts to topic specific expert page and uses them to analyze the existing search result from several angles. The original search result page is then re-ranked in a threaded form.
This approach has not only the advantage of ordering the original search results in a more relevant fashion, but it also acts as a convenient way for relegating spam pages into oblivion.
The existing PopGist prototype uses the search feed provided by Yahoo BOSS. Because Yahoo BOSS right now does not have API to get full content of a page in the provided search result, the response time of PopGist is somewhat slowed. The team of programmers hopes this will be addressed sometime soon. You can contact them at PopGist@gmail in the event you need further information.
