Playfic.com – Create Text Adventures

Playfic.comThe names of “Zork” and “Mistery House” are well-known to any person who is over 30, and who is really into computer games. These titles defined the genre of text adventures, a genre that was incredibly popular until titles with advanced graphics like “King Quest” and (a little later) “The Secret Of Monkey Island” set the bar much higher. When that happened, everything was sort of served on a plate. And things have gone a long way since then, of course, what with modern games feeling more interactive movies in which you’re the protagonist. But a site like Playfic is here to show the kids how things were done when we were young.

Playfic lets anybody create a text adventure that can be played by every other user of the site. The coding itself is handled using an intuitive programming language (Inform 7), and the games that you create can be played on the browser. They’re hosted on their own URLs, and any person you share these URLs with will be able to play them in full, and (also) to have them shared with their own friends in turn.

You can explore some of the many games that have already been created here, and whenever you’re ready you can create your own by visiting this section of the site.
