Perplexity AI, the company behind the AI-powered search engine, has announced plans to launch a new web browser called Comet. The browser is designed specifically for “agentic search,” which combines traditional search capabilities with AI to provide more comprehensive and accurate results. According to a post on X (formerly Twitter), Perplexity emphasized that Comet will feature a unique set of tools to integrate AI agents capable of performing tasks on behalf of the user.

While the exact features and functionalities of these AI agents have not been fully disclosed, the announcement has generated significant interest among tech enthusiasts. Perplexity’s CEO, Aravind Srinivas, stated, “Just like Perplexity reinvented search, we’re also reinventing the browser. Stay tuned for updates.”

The company’s existing search engine allows users to ask questions in natural language and receive answers in the same format, complete with source links.

Despite some concerns about the accuracy of these links, Perplexity aims to offer a more intuitive search experience.

Comet to introduce agentic search

The browser market is currently dominated by Google’s Chrome, with other notable browsers like Microsoft’s Edge and Opera being based on Google’s Chromium substructure.

Firefox and Safari stand as the primary competitors. It remains unclear whether Comet will rely on Chromium or be developed from scratch. Perplexity has not yet announced an official release date for Comet, but interested users can sign up for a waiting list on the browser’s website.

The company has mentioned that they are still seeking developers and that the beta phase is expanding weekly. In recent months, Perplexity has introduced several new features to its search engine, including an AI-powered shopping assistant called Buy With Pro and a visual search tool called Snap to Shop. The company also reportedly closed a $500 million funding round in December, tripling its valuation to $9 billion.
