Open Court is a new project that aims to illustrate the highs and lows of our legal system by giving us direct online access to courtrooms over the country. The idea is that users of Open Court can head to the site when there is a case that they want to follow either for personal or professional reasons, and see it all unfold before their very eyes.
That is the eventual aim of this project – to have the whole of the US covered. For the time being, only one courtroom is supported (Quincy District Court in Boston), but that was only to be expected – platforms like this one have to be deployed slowly and tested thoroughly first.
When you visit the site, you are given two basic options: jumping straight to a livestream, or going through the schedule for the day to see what is going to take place inside the courtroom.
It is only fair to say this is an interesting initiative. Law students and law abiding citizens will find it naturally attractive. And (it just has to be mentioned) people with criminal minds will also find it appealing, if only because it will let them see how the system works in minute detail.
