Since the State Library’s establishment in 1796, its mission has to provide, promote, and support high quality library and information services to the citizens of New Jersey.

The State Library fulfills is mission through its three branches: the State Library Information Center, the Library Development Bureau, and the Library for the Blind and Handicapped. The major function of the State Library Information Center is to provide library services to state government including reference assistance, access to extensive book, document and journal collections, as well as a wide variety of databases, online journals and e-books, photocopy, and interlibrary loan. The Library Development Bureau offers consultant services and technical assistance to create and improve library, information and literacy services in New Jersey. The Library for the Blind and Handicapped provides services to anyone living in New Jersey that cannot read regular printed books because of a physical impairment.
