A new video has surfaced as production reportedly ramps up on what appears to be the Nintendo Switch 2. Many expected an official announcement this fall, but it looks like Nintendo fans will close out 2024 without even an official tease. Nevertheless, rampant speculation and alleged leaks have filled the information void.
The latest video, which recently appeared on the Chinese video-sharing platform Bilibili by user 马里奥68, includes a very blurry rendering of someone detaching the Joy-Con controllers from the sides of a Switch 2 screen. The sides of the controllers appear to show magnets that would suction them onto the portable gaming console. The footage also shows infrared cameras, bigger shoulder buttons, and apparent pedal buttons on the backs.
Nintendo Switch 2 leak insights
The thick and rounded profile of the Joy-Con aligns with a previously alleged leak suggesting that the Switch 2 resembles an upgraded version of the existing console—potentially a bit wider and heavier but without significant stylistic changes. Some believe these renderings could be speculative, while others think the footage could be of an elaborate 3D printed fake based on those renderings.
These recent glimpses come as fans try to predict when Nintendo will launch its next console. The original Switch was released in March and enjoyed a successful first year with major titles like “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” and “Super Mario Odyssey.”
Rumors indicate that the Switch 2 was initially set for a 2023 release but was pushed to 2025 to avoid manufacturing shortages and a lack of significant first-party games at launch. Reports from various companies in Nintendo’s supply chain indicate a significant uptick in spending on components for a new console, suggesting millions of completed units could be ready by spring.
All we know for sure at this point is that Nintendo plans to make an announcement about its upcoming console. In the meantime, Nintendo has confirmed ongoing plans for the current hardware ecosystem, aiming to sell millions more of the existing Switch, likely to maintain consumer interest through the holiday season.
