Nintendo has confirmed that its upcoming next-generation console, unofficially referred to as the “Switch 2,” will be backward compatible with current Nintendo Switch games. This announcement was made by Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa during a recent Corporate Management Policy Briefing. Furukawa stated, “At today’s Corporate Management Policy Briefing, we announced that Nintendo Switch software will also be playable on the successor to Nintendo Switch.
Nintendo Switch Online will be available on the successor to Nintendo Switch as well.”
The decision to maintain compatibility between the Switch 2 and its predecessor suggests a more iterative approach to the console’s evolution. This contrasts with previous generational leaps, such as the transition from GameCube to Wii or Wii to Wii U. The original Nintendo Switch has been a massive success, selling 146 million units worldwide.
Backward compatibility confirmed
This makes it Nintendo’s highest-selling home console and the third best-selling console overall, behind only the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo DS. Given the Switch’s impressive sales figures, it is understandable why Nintendo would choose to build upon its success with the Switch 2.
By ensuring backward compatibility, the company can leverage the existing large user base and facilitate a smoother transition to the new console. While the announcement has sparked curiosity about other potential compatibility features, such as support for existing JoyCon controllers or the ability to use the current Switch with a new docking system, these details have not been confirmed. The Switch 2 is expected to offer enhanced graphics and performance compared to its predecessor.
However, fans will likely have to wait until at least 2025 for a full reveal of the console’s features and specifications. Until then, enthusiasts can look forward to a console that builds upon the popular elements of the original Switch while offering upgraded capabilities and a seamless transition for current Switch owners.
