Dong Nguyen, the creator of the original Flappy Bird game, has spoken out against a new version of the game being developed by a group called The Flappy Bird Foundation. In a tweet, Nguyen stated that he has no involvement with the new project and did not sell the rights to the game. The Flappy Bird Foundation claims to have acquired the rights to the game from a company called Gametech Holdings, LLC.
However, Nguyen insists that he “did not sell anything” and does not support the new version, which appears to have ties to cryptocurrency. Flappy Bird was a massive hit when it was released in 2013, becoming the most downloaded app on both iOS and Android app stores. However, Nguyen removed the game in 2014, citing the overwhelming attention and pressure it brought.
The foundation’s announcement of the game’s revival has been met with mixed reactions from the gaming community. Some have expressed excitement at the prospect of playing a new version of the beloved game, while others are skeptical of the project, particularly given Nguyen’s disapproval and the potential crypto elements.
Nguyen disapproves new Flappy Bird release
Researcher Varun Biniwale discovered a reference to Flappy Bird “soaring into Web 3.0″ on the Solana blockchain, suggesting possible crypto-related features. However, it is unclear if these plans have been abandoned or if they will be implemented in the new version. The Flappy Bird Foundation, which claims to be led by passionate fans and industry veterans, says it is committed to preserving the game’s legacy and expanding upon it.
The group plans to launch the new version by the end of October across multiple platforms, with iOS and Android versions expected in 2025. Despite the foundation’s efforts, Nguyen’s statement has made it clear that he does not endorse the project and wants no part in it. As the original creator, his dissociation from the revival has cast doubt on its legitimacy and future success.
The gaming community remains divided on the issue, with some eager to see how the new Flappy Bird will play out and others viewing it as a cash grab that disrespects Nguyen’s wishes. Only time will tell how the game will be received upon its release and whether it can capture the magic of the original.
