An innovative operating system (OS) recently mounted onto a Pixel phone showcased compatibility with Android via a custom build for a Virtual Machine (VM). This multipurpose OS, developed for the VM, signifies potential technological advancements.

The project, christened “ferrochrome,” was unveiled at a trade show. The special version of this OS, impressively functioning on an Android smartphone, drew considerable interest.

The real-time display of the OS was tested on a 2022 flagship Pixel phone within a VM environment. Despite a glitch restricting the system to be shown on all Tensor-powered devices, the alternate device choice proved to be successful.

A unique VM launcher, an Android application responsible for creating and firing up a virtual machine, was employed as the primary tool for the project.

Exploring Android compatibility in new Pixel OS

It enabled multiple Android systems to run independently on one’s smartphone, ensuring optimum performance, versatility, privacy, and unmatched functional flexibility.

While the new OS displayed some minor glitches, like sign-in uncertainty, it flagged up and swiftly connected peripherals like a mouse and keyboard. Despite the glitches and audio limitations, the system is bedazzled with high-resolution graphics, rapid response times, and effortless navigation. Advanced features demanded a steep learning curve, more so for less tech-savvy users.

At present, due to the absence of a VM launcher app, the integration with official Android builds is not under consideration. However, with the app expected to become a crucial element in future Android developments, this scenario is forecasted to change.

The potential to include additional OSs in the future seems promising, despite some slight technical issues. This signifies the onset of an adaptable mobile environment, giving users more control over their device’s functionality and pointing towards the future direction of diverse operating systems fused into mobile devices.
