The United States will observe a National Day of Mourning on January 9th to honor former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away at the age of 100. President Joe Biden declared the day of mourning shortly after Carter’s death, which is customary following the passing of an American president. U.S. stock markets, including the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq, will remain closed on this day to pay homage to the nation’s deceased leader.

Tal Cohen, Nasdaq president, stated, “We mourn the loss of President Carter and will be closing our U.S. markets during the National Day of Mourning to celebrate his life and honor his legacy.” The NYSE will also fly its U.S. flag at half-staff throughout the mourning period. The tradition of closing stock markets to honor deceased presidents dates back to April 15, 1865, when the NYSE first closed following the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. In subsequent years, the exchange has closed to honor other U.S. presidents, including Franklin D.

In addition to the stock market closures, the U.S. Postal Service will suspend regular operations, and federal departments and agencies will be closed, except for essential personnel required for national defense and security. The Supreme Court building will also be closed on January 9, as ordered by Chief Justice John Roberts. The National Day of Mourning coincides with the official state funeral at the Washington National Cathedral, where President Biden is expected to deliver a eulogy.
Carter’s remains will lie in state at the United States Capitol Rotunda before the funeral services. While many institutions will close or alter their schedules, essential services will continue to ensure the safety and security of the public. The National Day of Mourning provides an opportunity for the nation to reflect on the contributions and legacy of President Jimmy Carter, who is remembered for his humanitarian efforts even after his tenure in public office.
