Motorola is stepping into the world of advanced AI with a new concept that aims to turn smartphones into true personal assistants. At Lenovo’s recent Tech World ’24 conference, Motorola showcased a proof-of-concept AI model called the Large Action Model (LAM). This innovative technology has the potential to revolutionize how users interact with their devices.

Unlike existing AI assistants that primarily provide text or image-based responses, LAM is designed to understand the user’s environment and respond by executing real-world tasks. In a demonstration video, a woman was shown ordering a coffee verbally through her wireless earbuds, with LAM seamlessly handling the process on her phone. Motorola envisions LAM being used for a wide range of tasks, from booking rides and making online reservations to setting alarms and choosing playlists.

The goal is to make smartphones more proactive in managing daily activities, adapting to user preferences over time. While LAM is still in the concept stage, Motorola has made progress with other AI features.

Moto AI software tools like “Catch me up” for summarizing notifications and “Remember this” for saving information are currently in beta testing. Updates to Motorola’s Smart Connect platform also aim to unify phones, PCs, and tablets through natural language controls and shared personal data. Motorola is not the only company exploring AI integration in smartphones.

Tech giants like Apple and Samsung are also pursuing AI features, partnering with OpenAI and Google respectively. However, a recent survey conducted in collaboration with YouGov revealed that many users remain skeptical about the usefulness of AI in smartphones. If Motorola’s LAM concept becomes a reality, it could significantly change how people interact with their devices.

An AI assistant capable of accomplishing meaningful tasks would offer substantial value compared to current AI tools focused on niche applications. As Motorola continues to develop its AI concept, the industry will be closely watching its progress. The potential to transform smartphone usability and redefine the mobile experience keeps Motorola’s AI endeavors in the spotlight.
