Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a federal holiday honoring the civil rights leader, falls on Monday, Jan. 20, 2025.
This day is also Inauguration Day for President-elect Donald Trump’s second term, marking a rare overlap that won’t happen again until 2053. The coincidence of these two significant events means changes to the schedules of various services. Post offices will be closed, and there will be no mail delivery on MLK Day.
Major banks like Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and Chase will also be closed. UPS pickup and delivery will not be available, but some FedEx services will still operate.
MlK Day service schedule changes
Most businesses, including restaurants and stores, are expected to remain open, but it’s best to check with local establishments for any changes in hours. Trump’s inauguration does not appear to include specific events honoring MLK Day. Some critics plan to skip the inauguration in favor of observing MLK Day, citing Trump’s policies and rhetoric as being at odds with King’s message.
However, King’s children, Bernice and Martin Luther King III, encourage people to pay attention to both events. They emphasize the importance of engaging with the day’s happenings and moving from reflection to action in service of building the Beloved Community. The CME market will also see changes to its trading schedule on MLK Day.
Trading will halt at 12:00 PM CST and reopen at the usual times. Open positions must meet Exchange Maintenance Margin by 11:45 AM CST. This unprecedented overlap of MLK Day and Inauguration Day serves as a reminder of the ongoing journey toward equality and the diverse ways Americans choose to honor and observe their history.
