MapKnitter is a different way to show other how well you know your own neighborhood, or any area that for any reason or the other you’ve got to known like the palm of your hand. This site lets you create aerial maps by combining these photos that you have taken yourself, or that you can find on the Internet. You take these pictures, and then have them placed inside of a Google Map. The map’s location is picked by supplying the name of the place, or by providing its coordinates. In any case, you’ll get to rotate and crop your photos until they fit there perfectly. And when that happens, then you can both share the map online and have it saved to your HD. Lots and lots of formats are already supported: GeoTiff, TMS, OMS-Style, OpenLayers, JPG…
And maps can also come with a description. You can explain everybody why you’ve decided to map any area, and you can tell them when your photos were taken.
The site includes all the latest maps that have been added to the database on its homepage, and there’s also a chart with the site’s most active authors for you to know who to follow more easily.
