Likeathon intends to provide internauts with a whole new way to discover and recommend web content. In the most general terms available, it offers a Digg/Reddit voting system tied to a Facebook-centered experience.
Instead of “digging” things as they have always done, users simply proceed to “like” them through the Facebook like button. The more likes that something receives, then the higher overall ranking that it achieves. And the more active that you become, then the higher social standing that you have.
In this way, Likeathon makes for the discovery of new websites and services and it also encourages social sharing by giving users a bigger degree of visibility on the Social Web.
It’s too early to say if it can really dethrone Digg and Reddit (which is its eventual aim, after all). The site still has some way to go in terms of design, and some aspects that have already begun being implemented (such as being able to buy VIP points) have to be polished. In any case, it will be exciting to watch the way everything is taken from this point onwards.
