IMooch is a new social network cum marketplace. Basically it’s tapping into that new trend of prosumers, consumers who also produce stuff, letting people make friends and money at the same time.
Users make mooches, which are basically the things you see on every social network out there—videos, songs, photo montages, recipes, an ad—the only caveat is that it has to be original. Usually you’d have to pay $6 bucks to post your new content aka a mooch, however, currently it’s free. Next give five of those dollars to five other moochers; at the same time fellow moochers who like your stuff will be giving you their dollars, so you can make all your money back. You’ve gotta give to get, but if that seems too drastic to you, it is still free now.
There are six types of content that can be posted on iMooch: audio, pics, downloads, videos, text, and dating. Dating is probably the most interesting mooch. Users post their physical deets and a short description; they can add up to three photos and they have to select what sort of relationship they’re looking for, e.g. platonic, or not. Basically, you’re offering yourself up for a tip and some company maybe. A buck’s a buck though, right ?
iMooch.com In Their Own Words
“iMooch is content sharing, meets social networking, meets “hey buddy, can you spare a buck?”. In corporate speak, iMooch is a new kind of marketplace for the people who both produce and consume the content that makes up the web (“prosumers” (yes, annoying industry buzzword (‘yes’, parentheses within parentheses))). The hope’s to build a thriving peer-to-peer economy where anyone with even a nubbin of interesting, useful or entertaining content can make money, support & network with other creative people, and browse cool stuff that’s been rated buck-worthy by our community.”
Why iMooch.com It Might Be A Killer
iMooch is trying to capitalize on the user generated content market, which so far hasn’t been successfully monetized. They’ve got a clever little name and a polished interface. It’s pretty easy to get your Mooch posted—directions are clear, site’s got tabs and the layout is clutter-free.
Some Questions About iMooch.com
iMooch has a few problematic areas, namely in the payment scheme. Who’s going to shell out $6 just to give it all away? I have a feeling that a good number of users won’t be happy doing so. How viable is their $5 give away? It can’t last long, but they’ve got to entice more users to get on board the mooch train.
