When FourSquare first started gaining traction, one of the first things that happened was that someone launched a site named PleaseRobMe in which the negative connotations of location-based networking where brought to the fore. It is hard not to think about that website when coming across I Can Stalk U.
It has the goal of raising awareness about the information that people end up sharing inadvertently though Twitter. To these ends, it goes through Twitter’s public timeline, collects together these tweets in which people reveal their whereabouts and then proceeds to have them displayed.
Something like this is not breaking anybody’s back, in the same way that PleaseRobMe did not spell the end of FourSquare. If anything, the site is a vivid reminder of the perils that social networking has got, and which many people are surprisingly oblivious to. You would think everybody understands that disclosing your current location over Twitter is not really a wise move, but many don’t seem to get it. I Can Stalk U hopes to illuminate these individuals, and have them change their ways before something lamentable happens to them.
