There are a lot of sites where you can review movies, and IMDb is the one that springs to mind more easily along with compadres like All Movie Guide and so forth. These sites include star ratings in order to rank each movie, and some people claim that such an approach is not the best one.
That vantage point holds water when we see movies sprinting to the top of review sites upon being released because they receive a lot of 10 out of 10 or 5 out of 5 ratings. We all smell a fish when that happens, and a resource like this one aims to address that situation somehow.
In essence, what it does is to let you compare just two movies at the same time by choosing the better movie. The covers of the movies are displayed, and a summary that highlights its key points is included. Also, you are given the option of clicking on an “I
haven’t seen it” button in the event one of the two films is not familiar to you, and you wish another one be displayed in order to do a comparison.
When I checked it out, I was presented with options like “Big Momma’s House” vs. “Life”. That is, movies that had some kind of points in common. But I also came across “10,000 BC” vs. “Analyze This” – IE, movies that had no point of comparison. The team should work a little more on that in order to give a better-focused service, because the basic premise is interesting.
GreatMovieExperiment.com In Their Own Words
“We think that star ratings are too subjective and open to bias and abuse. The Great Movie Experiment invites you instead to vote on movies head to head. As well as being good fun, we think the resulting rankings list will make for very interesting reading.”
