Google’s Pixel 9a has been the subject of multiple leaks this week. The latest renders suggest the phone will feature a flush, pill-shaped camera window, foregoing the traditional camera bump. According to the leaks, the Pixel 9a will measure 154 x 73 x 8.6mm, slightly larger than its predecessor.

It is expected to come in four colors: Porcelain, Obsidian, Peony, and Iris. In addition to the design details, a collection of eight wallpapers that will accompany the Pixel 9a has also surfaced. These wallpapers have light and dark versions corresponding to each colorway.

Android Authority suggests that the Pixel 9a could hit shelves as early as March 2025, ahead of the typical May release for A-Series Pixels. This aligns with reports that Google is moving up its entire timeline of releases.

Google shifts Pixel 9a timeline

Multiple sources confirm that the Pixel 9a will be available for pre-order in mid-March 2025, with shipping and in-store availability before the end of the month. This new, expedited release schedule is expected to be the norm for the Pixel a-series going forward. The shift in Google’s timeline is likely to coincide with overall yearly tech cycles and major shopping events like Black Friday.

It also aligns their releases more closely with partners and could facilitate Fall Flagship devices debuting with the latest Android version. Android 16, codenamed Baklava, is also projected for release in Q2 2025, with its AOSP push occurring before the end of June 2025. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean a Pixel update at that time.

The formal update may coincide with the Pixel 10 launch in August. Overall, it’s been a revealing week for the Pixel 9a, with leaks providing a comprehensive look at Google’s upcoming midranger. The accelerated timeline suggests that Google is making significant changes to its release strategy, which could have far-reaching implications for the Android ecosystem.
