Google is rolling out new Gemini extensions, including the Google Home app, which will soon replace Google Assistant for smart home control. Users will start seeing the integration in the Gemini app this week, with a gradual rollout over the next few weeks. Once integrated, you’ll be able to ask Gemini to make changes to your home using natural language.
The functionality will allow for more intuitive commands, such as “the sun is too bright in the living room,” prompting the AI assistant to close the smart window blinds, or “help me clean up the kitchen,” which would start a robot vacuum. To try out these new features, open the Google Home app on your Android device, tap the button, and select “Public Preview.” From there, press “Join Public Preview” to enroll your account.
Gemini’s new smart home integration
You’ll then gain access to the Google Home extension for Gemini. However, there are some limitations. The integration is only available on Android devices and restricted to English prompts.
Additionally, Gemini can’t control smart security devices such as gates, cameras, locks, doors, and garage doors. On devices that don’t have Gemini, such as certain displays, you’ll still be using Google Assistant. This marks a big step for Google, as the new Gemini extension aims to replace Google Assistant for smart home operations, providing a more streamlined and natural user experience.
