Peas and cancer are not words that are often associated, but The Frozen Pea Fund hopes to change this. Susan Reynolds, an avid Twitter user, was diagnosed with breast cancer on December 7th.
To deal with the pain associated with the tests, she would put frozen peas on her breasts. Not only did she find that the size and weight were the most comfortable option, but that seeing a bag of peas in her shirt led people to “tease” her rather than cry. Her involvement in the twitter community, in addition to her blog, publicized her cause and sparked a movement, out of which the Frozen Pea Fund was born. The website solicits donations to go to the American Cancer Society, and Twitter users are urged to display frozen peas on their avatars to raise awareness for the cause. They successfully raised $3,500 in the first 15 hours after launch.
