From Software, the acclaimed developer behind the Elden Ring series, recently shared insights into their upcoming multiplayer-focused game, Elden Ring Nightreign. Junya Ishizaki, the game’s director, discussed the fresh gameplay ideas and design decisions that set Nightreign apart from its predecessors. Nightreign introduces a new multiplayer angle to the beloved From Software formula.

Ishizaki explained that the game’s concept stemmed from creating a new sense of battle by expanding on and changing the tempo of Elden Ring’s battle systems. This shift in pace aims to keep longtime fans engaged while offering something new. As Ishizaki transitions from a battle designer to a director, he faces new challenges and freedoms.

He noted, “Coming from a battle designer to a director…

I have to make a lot more decisions.” This new responsibility allowed him to influence more aspects of the game, translating his battle design knowledge into a broader gameplay perspective. In Nightreign, players face challenges as part of a squad of three, but it maintains From Software’s core principles such as self-growth through overcoming challenges.

Ishizaki emphasized, “We put a lot of trust in [players] to learn and to overcome these challenges.”

Nightreign’s gameplay is more spontaneous compared to the methodical pace of Elden Ring.

Nightreign introduces new gameplay dynamics

Instead of long journeys culminating in boss battles, Nightreign features ad-lib decision-making and on-the-fly adjustments, which Ishizaki believes will provide a fresh learning curve for players.

The game’s design incorporates a battle royale element, but this was not a starting point for the project. The “Ring of Reign” mechanic, which closes in around the battlefield, was introduced during development to guide player movement and decision-making. One significant shift in Nightreign is its approach to player isolation versus team play.

Ishizaki acknowledged that while Nightreign is predominantly a multiplayer game, it can still be enjoyed solo. The game allows players to disperse across the map and face challenges independently before culminating in cooperative battles, aiming to retain some of the atmospheric isolation beloved by fans. Despite its faster pace and multiplayer nature, Nightreign still encapsulates essential role-playing elements.

Ishizaki pointed out the importance of maintaining exploration, character development, and challenging combat, providing a well-rounded experience consistent with From Software’s reputation. With Nightreign, From Software and Ishizaki are not just expanding their horizons into multiplayer experiences but are also staying true to the elements that have long defined their titles. As the game continues to develop, it will be interesting to see how these new systems integrate with fans’ expectations and lead to new adventures in the world of Elden Ring.
