Dynasty Warriors: Origins, the latest installment in the long-running series, has made a significant impact since its worldwide release in January 2025. The game has sold well, entering the top 10 retail sales charts in the UK and becoming the top-selling game on PC retailer Steam. Tomohiko Sho, head of developer Omega Force, revealed that the team had initially planned to create Dynasty Warriors 10 but ultimately decided to reinvent the series with Dynasty Warriors: Origins.
This decision was made in response to mixed fan reactions to Dynasty Warriors 9. “We wanted to leverage the power of new consoles to create a fresher experience,” Mr. Sho explained.
“The new hardware, including the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, can render tens of thousands of enemies on-screen, a leap from the capabilities of older consoles like the PlayStation 2.”
However, this focus on performance came at the cost of multiplayer, a mainstay of the series. Mr.

Sho indicated that if the new game is well-received, multiplayer could return in future installments.
In the period between Dynasty Warriors 9 and Dynasty Warriors: Origins, Omega Force focused on creating spin-offs featuring characters from franchises such as Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda and Sega’s Persona 5. These projects prioritized staying true to their respective franchises rather than pushing hardware limits. Looking to the future, Mr.
Sho expressed interest in creating spin-offs for Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, showcasing his ambition to expand the Dynasty Warriors universe. Dynasty Warriors: Origins marks a turning point for the series, focusing on realizing the full potential of modern gaming hardware and responding to fan expectations. If successful, it could pave the way for exciting new directions, including the return of multiplayer and potential collaborations with other popular franchises.
