Amid a digital shift, Argentina’s cash-intensive culture, prevalent in restaurants and pubs, experiences a tipping transformation. Due to the country’s largest denomination bill amounting to approximately $1.50 USD, carrying cash has often been cumbersome. Lately, however, there has been an increase in mobile and card transaction gratuities, creating new dynamics for consumers and service industry workers alike.

With the fintech sector advancing rapidly, Mercado Pago, a leading e-commerce platform, unveils a novel digital tipping feature, simplifying tipping through personal Mercado Pago aliases. This feature not only increases convenience but also aligns with the rising demand for contact-less payment methods, ultimately allowing service workers to fully partake in the digital economy.

This feature’s inception came after Agustin Onagoity, Senior Director for Mercado Pago Argentina, noted servers adversely affected by the increase in digital transactions and the declining use of cash. To alleviate their concern, a digital platform was developed, modernizing tipping through QR codes. Customers and employees embraced the development positively, marking the initiative’s success in adapting to swiftly changing consumer behaviour.

As part of a broader economic plan, the Argentinean government is seeking to standardize tipping via card payments. One strategy is the adoption of QR codes or card payments for public transport, as seen in New York and London.

This measure is meant to modernize and speed up economic procedures, aligning Argentina with nations that have switched to digital payment systems. Tipping standardization through card payments could also promote better tax collection through more efficient tracking and recording.

However, despite major steps towards digitization, cash transactions, particularly in US dollars, remain prevalent. Federal Reserve research reveals that Argentina remains one of the top recipients of US dollars, and while digital transactions gain popularity, rural areas remain largely cash-dependent. Therefore, US bills will likely continue to play a significant role in global transactions.

According to Pedro Filippini, a Buenos Aires barista, despite economic challenges, cash remains critical. Yet, Mercado Pago’s success can be attributed to its user-friendly platform and the ability to track transactions. Its value additions, such as offering micro-loans, further attract users facing financial difficulties. This suggests that despite the strength of traditional banking, platforms like Mercado Pago are winning public trust.
