Former Disney actress Bridgit Mendler has ventured into the tech industry with her space technology startup, Northwood Space, based in El Segundo, California.

Aimed at revolutionizing satellite communication and making it accessible to a wider viewership, Northwood Space is currently working on game-changing technology to streamline satellite communication processes.

Mendler, serving as CEO, has successfully raised over $6 million for the startup from high-profile investors such as Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund and Andreessen Horowitz. This considerable financial support gives the project a strong position and credibility in the marketplace.

After her time with Disney, Mendler focused on her academics, earning a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a law degree from Harvard University. Her diverse experience in entertainment, law, and academics have equipped her with the expertise needed to take on challenges in her new venture.

Northwood Space is centrally focused on streamlining the production of satellite ground stations and enhancing their flexibility, a move designed to mitigate the long delays satellite operators face when waiting for essential equipment. Northwood Space addresses this industry-wide issue by championing advanced technologies and modern manufacturing methods.

This unique strategy entails potential rental services for their antennas, akin to the services offered by AWS and Microsoft Azure for server capacity. This innovative solution has caught the attention of venture capital and private equity companies like BoxGroup, Also Capital, and Humba Ventures.

Companies such as BoxGroup, Also Capital, and Humba Ventures have responded positively to this pioneer concept, showing significant interest with potential investments and partnerships in the pipeline. This could disrupt the market, much like AWS and Microsoft Azure did in the server capacity arena.

Mendler, backed by her husband Griffin Cleverly, a former Lockheed Martin engineer, and Shaurya Luthra, head of software, has plans for a trial involving a spacecraft in orbit later this year. This plan dovetails with her recent announcement of becoming a parent to a four-year-old boy.
