Bethesda held its first-ever Fallout Day broadcast on October 23, revealing new features coming to Fallout 76.

The date is significant in Fallout lore, as it marks the day in 2077 when nuclear weapons devastated the world. The broadcast focused on updates for the MMO Fallout 76 rather than announcing new Fallout games.

Bethesda stated that more players have engaged with Fallout this year than ever before, setting record numbers across almost every title in the franchise. Players can access Fallout 76 for free until October 29 as part of a free play week to commemorate Fallout Day. One of the major highlights is the introduction of camp pets later this year.

Players can have a cat or a dog in their camps, dress them, and add furniture for their enjoyment. Bethesda hinted at more diverse pets in future updates.

December will bring player titles, which include a prefix and a suffix that players can combine to create unique nicknames.

Titles are earned as rewards. The upcoming Gleaming Depths raid is a traditional MMO-style dungeon designed to challenge hardcore players. Set in an abandoned Enclave research lab, it features the Ultracite Terror, a giant irradiated snake as the final boss.

Players need to be around level 300 and have a well-equipped squad of up to four players to tackle this raid. Another exciting update is the introduction of 4-star legendary weapons and armor, offering the highest tier gear in the game.

For the first time in Fallout history, players will soon be able to transform into a ghoul. After completing the Ghoulification quest at level 50, players will become immune to radiation damage; instead, rads will heal them and unlock unique abilities. The transformation exempts players from the need for food and water, replacing them with a feral meter.

Going feral provides perks such as turning into a hand-to-hand combatant. Ghoul-specific perks include “Battle-Genes” (gain 1HP per second while in combat). Ghouls will have unique narrative options, as various factions in the game have differing opinions about them.

For instance, the Brotherhood of Steel despises ghouls. Players who wish to revert to human form will have the option to do so. Lastly, Bethesda teased the addition of fishing to Fallout 76, a long-requested feature by fans.

The broadcast ended with Todd Howard, Bethesda’s development chief, thanking fans for their continued support and expressing excitement for the future of the Fallout franchise.
