Apple faces a unique dilemma with its upcoming M5 Vision Pro.
As I understand it, production of the cheaper Vision Pro has been delayed beyond 2027 for a while now. This means Apple's only new head-mounted display device in 2025 will be the Vision Pro with an upgraded M5 processor.
I think what really drove Apple to delay the cheaper…

While updating the device with the latest Apple silicon is a logical move, it could deter prospective buyers from purchasing the current model. As potential buyers consider treating themselves to Apple’s next-gen technology for $3,500 this holiday season, the knowledge that an M5 model is on the horizon may cause hesitation.

This is especially understandable given that Apple has already launched other devices, like iPad Pros and Macs, with the M4 family of chips. The introduction of the M5 model could also lead to buyer’s remorse among early adopters of the Vision Pro. If the current Vision Pro can’t fully support Apple Intelligence and its capabilities are maxed out with the M2 chip, existing owners might feel shortchanged.

Spending $3,500 is substantial, and the prospect of needing to upgrade within 12-18 months to access the newest features could be frustrating.
Apple’s M5 dilemma impacts buyers
Despite the complications, the M5 Vision Pro is essential for the growth of the Vision Pro platform.
Apple has a history of releasing significant updates and ensuring their devices remain cutting-edge. The Vision Pro, being a new platform, cannot afford to go years between updates, especially given the rapid advancements in technology. To mitigate potential negative impacts, Apple could consider offering generous trade-in values for the first Vision Pro.
This approach might help ease the pain for early adopters, ensuring they don’t feel left behind. An M5 Vision Pro is an inevitability if Apple wants to keep growing the platform. The key will be how well Apple manages to minimize the adverse effects of this debut for its loyal customer base.
