AmericasLibrary.gov – America’s Story

AmericasLibrary.govIf only we have had these in my time! AmericasLibrary.gov is a site fully devoted to presenting the history of America, its land, its cultural traditions and its most influential historical personalities in an attractive and multimedia format, as a way to engage young audiences (aged about 8-12) into learning and enjoying the study of history.

The site was built using the resources of the Library of Congress, and thus lots of videos, recordings and photographs are displayed at the site, including some really interesting bits about popular music, which include a list of uncommon instruments, like the Marimba, Zurna or the Cimbalom, with pictures and sounds as well. The site includes lots of information on sports, geography and history, generally presenting little known and appealing information, like the content of Abraham Lincoln’s pockets the night he was murdered, or ephemerides, that allow young boys and girls to explore what happened in history in any date they choose. The site’s clearly educational outlook will make it very useful not only for learners, but for teachers as well, who’ll probably find lots of great resources to plan their lessons.
