Among internet blog sites, AMERICAblog, which first appeared on the internet in early 2004, is a giant. The site, which maintains its presence at americablog.com, receives over a million page views per month with over 400,000 unique visitors. The company also owns and operates “AMERICAblog gay”, and “AMERICAblog Elections.” They are managed by John Aravosis, a powerful political writer who also just happens to be a lawyer. The Advocate named him one of the most “powerful gay men” in America. His full time job is as editor and chief of americablog.com, where he, along with three other staff, seeks out and publishes stories that are focused on news and opinion of politics. Visitors to the site will find links and article that cover the primaries, and the general elections being held throughout the United States. Also entire blogs about the economy and jobs are major areas receiving coverage. The company has been recognized and awarded for breaking several major news stories over the past few years, and Washingtonian magazine named its writers among the rising stars in journalism.
Americablog.com clearly presents a liberal bias to their reporting, with many stories that refer to “right wing republicans.” But they also appear to leave no stone untouched, blogging about “Mormons baptizing President Obama’s mother even though she was long dead.” And “Obama says… banning gay marriage is good.” Visitors are sometimes presented with three different versions of the same news story as they appear from other news outlets, and then an editorial blog with comments follows.
