Wikia is a new site that works like a wiki where you can search for information and images that are collected by a community. Wikia is in its first stages but contains information on most topics.
When you perform a search you can find a list of definitions, sites, and mini articles. Once you become a member you can search through images and profiles as well. In fact when you perform a search on the right hand side of the page there is a list of profiles that are connected to the topic that is being searched. If you are a member you can click on the member to see how they are related to the topic and how they contributed to the results. Wikia hopes to be useful search engine where community members can add helpful content.
Alpha In Their Own Words
“Wikia’s search engine concept is that of trusted user feedback from a community of users acting together in an open, transparent, public way. Of course, before we start, we have no user feedback data. So the results are pretty bad. But we expect them to improve rapidly in coming weeks, so please bookmark the site and return often.
Right now, the most important thing you can do is help with the “miniarticles” that appear at the top of popular search terms. These will vary in purpose according to the circumstance, but the primary uses will be:
• Short definitions
• Disambiguations
• Photos
• See also
At the bottom of every page is a linke to “Post bug reports here”… please use that link liberally to give us large amounts of feedback.
I believe that search is a fundamental part of the infrastructure of the Internet, and that it can and should therefore be done in an open, objective, accountable way. This site, which we have been working on for a long time now, represents the first draft of the future of search.
Please feel free to join us, make some friends, and let’s try to do something friendly, interesting, and different.”
Why Alpha It Might Be A Killer
Wikia has a neat attractive interface. The logo is very likeable. The site is easy to navigate and although it lacks a bit of information at the moment the site does a great job at explaining how it will improve in the future. The forum is very useful, you can post questions and see what other community members are discussing.
Some Questions About Alpha
When will the star application work so users can vote on the listed articles and sites? Are there any future plans to have Wikia available on mobile devices?
