You see… the problem with the internet is that it is regulated by the law that states that whenever somebody comes up with a nice and good idea, everybody will trail and develop the exact same thing with a different name, and that is a big problem, as whenever the people at AOL spend hours and hours looking at Google or Yahoo groups trying to understand it to copy it, they are using up precious time they could be investing in generating a more interesting thing that does not involve reworking for the gazillionth time the original idea of a forum. As you have by now guessed, AimGroups.
com is the discussion group platform powered by AOL, and is still in beta version, which means that for the time being media sharing options are not working, and that only group owners can invite people to join, though people can join freely as long as the group is public (you can also create a private group, if you so want to do). Unfortunately, users can only view a group after they’ve joined it, a feature which seems very inconvenient in my opinion: one should be able to browse a bit before deciding, and generally a brief introduction and stats about number of users is not enough to make a group’s site interesting or not. As is the case with its many many competitors, users have to hold or create an AOL account to participate in the groups, and can join as many as they like.
