The American Horticultural Society, established in 1922, is one of the oldest national gardening organizations in the United States. This organization has merged three horticultural organizations that existed previously including the American Horticultural Society, the National Horticultural Society, and the American Horticultural Council to form the organization that exists today.
As well as publishing many horticultural reference books, the organization also publishes “The American Gardener”, a bi-monthly magazine for its members. As well as the magazine, members of the AHS benefit from participation in the annual seed exchange, discounted or free admission into participating botanic gardens and arboretas across the country, and discounted admission into AHS events and programs. The American Horticultural Society organizes several events a year in order to educate and inspire gardeners. Every summer the AHS puts on the National Children & Youth Garden Symposium. This forum is intended for educators, garden designers, community leaders, and children’s gardening advocates to get together and collaborate on techniques and practices in order to get children involved with the natural world.
