Although currently under construction, African.com generally provides resources about African art and culture according to the title tags. At the moment, the website simple has an opt-in form for visitors who would like to supply their name and email address in order to receive information about updates to the African.com website. The continent of Africa offers diverse and unique art and culture. Often art created by African Americans is also categorized as African art and other African Diasporas (in Europe, Brazil, and elsewhere throughout the world).
The earliest African sculptures are from the Nok Culture in Nigeria. They are believed to have been created approximately 500 BC. In Niger, African rock art with 6000 year old carvings was also discovered. In the 10th Century, more advanced methods of art were developed in the sub-Saharan portion of Africa including metalwork, brass casting, and ornamental embellishments with precious stones and ivory.
Once the African.com website is up and running again, it will hopefully provide information about the influence or African art on Western art and architecture. Hopefully the website will also provide details about contemporary African art and modern African artists such as Olu Oguibe, Kendell Geers, Yinka Shonibare, and Marlene Dumas. The South African artists of the 1950s and 1960s are also important to discuss as there were pioneers of contemporary African art. Those artists include Walter Battiss, Cyril Fradan, and Irma Stern.
The African.com website also suggests that the site will provide information about African culture. The extent of this information remains to be seen however users can only hope that the site will address the clothing, music, cuisine, and religions of the different African nations on the African.com website.
