State workers’ compensation insurance records reveal that over half of Colorado businesses are now employing remote workers from outside the state. This represents a major shift in traditional employment trends in the last 15 years. The trend is aided by technological advancements that have made it easier to integrate remote workforces seamlessly, and also mirrors a wider national trend.

The shift presents significant implications for Colorado’s economy and labor laws, necessitating changes in workers’ compensation policies, taxation rules, and other employment-related matters. The need for these changes grows as more companies adopt this new employment model, hence the need for state authorities to adapt proactively and safeguard the rights and interests of remote workers.

Pinnacol Assurance, Colorado’s premier workers’ compensation insurer, affirms this trend. The insurer covers a diverse range of employees working across various sectors and in different states. Its policies offer both minor and severe injury coverages, thereby providing essential financial aid to employees in distress. Through continuous injury trend analysis, Pinnacol aims to foster safer work environments via effective preventive measures.

Colorado firms turning to out-of-state remote employment

Quincy Douglass, Pinnacol’s Vice President of Operations, discloses that over 50% of Colorado businesses employ workers living outside the state, indicating that this trend is not limited to Colorado and is becoming the norm in different industries nationwide. As a response, Pinnacol has prioritized adapting to this changing landscape to continue offering exemplary service to its clients, irrespective of their location.

Data from the Colorado Division of Workers Comp Insurance shows a rising trend in businesses acquiring workers’ compensation policies that cover multiple states. In 2019, 44.61% of businesses had such policies, a remarkable increase from 21.63% in 2009. As remote work expands into non-traditional roles and across states, Pinnacol facilitates seamless transitions for its clients’ employees by collaborating with other endorsed carriers when a worker relocates.

Remote work is finding roots in non-traditional roles, including IT, marketing, and administrative personnel in industries such as construction. This is evident in Denver tech companies, with about half of the employees at some firms working from locations outside Colorado. Despite being challenged by time zone differences and communication issues, the benefits of remote work, such as increased employee satisfaction and reduced office costs, are deemed worthwhile by many companies.

The move toward remote work is not exclusive to Colorado. Other companies across the nation like San Francisco-based Twilio are launching remote work support programs, while some like Twitter are offering employees the option to work remotely permanently. This underline the seismic shift in work culture, transitioning from traditional work environments to a more flexible and decentralized format, thereby redefining productivity in the digital age.
